T.V. Talk Show hosts and money

Alright, I like t.v. talk shows as much as the next guy but sometimes I have to stop and just think about how much money they have.  I used to watch Oprah and I know she used to give away quite a bit of “stuff” to her audiences.  Things like books, cd’s, electronics, etc.  Lately, I have been watching Ellen Degeneres and I quite enjoy her show.  She is currently doing Ellen’s 12 Days of Giveaway’s where she gives things away to the people in the audience.  Yesterday on her show my roommate and I were adding up how much each item cost that she was giving away.  She ended up giving away a total of items worth $2,500.00 to each person in the audience.  I know often times hosts like that receive these items as promotional items from the manufacturers…but still!  Could not that money be used for something else?  I would love to be in the audience and get all those things but I think we could use our money better.  What do you guys think about this?
